The term “gig economy” seems to be all the rage lately. More and more people seem to be looking for side gigs (or side hustles) to earn income. From retirees to full-time professionals looking to increase their spending power, everyone seems to be wanting to tap into this new gig economy.

What Is the Gig Economy?

How to bring in income as a stay at home mom

The term “gig economy” refers to a market where a substantial number of workers earn their income as independent contractors instead of having traditional salaried positions with the companies for which they provide services.

There are many advantages to working as a contractor, such as flexibility, the ability to work from anywhere, and the freedom to choose your own contracts.

On the flip side, there are several notable drawbacks to consider. The most significant challenge is the difficulty of securing contract work, particularly in a crowded and competitive market.

New contractors often get lost in the myriad of opportunities.

There are countless articles highlighting the story of a twenty-something who is earning $42,000 a month from a side gig that only cost $1 to start. The authors of these articles usually go on telling you how they can teach you to build your own online empire at the low price of $59.99.

While “get rich quick” schemes have existed long before the internet, the allure of quick success can be hard to resist. It’s easy to get caught up in these enticing tales that promise financial freedom overnight.

How to Bring In Income as a Stay at Home Mom

As a stay-at-home mom striving to supplement your household income, you may find it challenging to sift through the vast array of online income opportunities. With so much information—and misinformation—available, distinguishing legitimate chances to earn from the countless schemes can feel like an overwhelming task.

So, how can you effectively navigate in the chaos of virtual side hustle nonsense and find genuine income opportunities that truly fit your skills and lifestyle? Here’s how.

A 5-Step Guide to Finding the Perfect Side Gig

  1. Complete a Self Assessment
  2. Identify Your Transferable Skills
  3. Do Your Research
  4. Connect and Reach Out to People Who Can Help You Gain Experience and Obtain Contracts
  5. Do a Reality Check
Ways to make money on the side

1. Complete a Self Assessment

Reflect on why you need a side gig.

Being a wsahm is not always easy (here’s more on being a working stay at home mom). So, if you are going to embark on the journey of working while also being a full-time mom, it’s important to know why you are doing it in the first place.

Ask yourself why you need to find an additional source of income.  It might seem like an obvious question, but taking the time to reflect on it can reveal insights you hadn’t considered before.

While you are working on your self-assessment, remember to:

Be Honest (Determine Your True Values, Needs, and Wants)

It’s easy to lie to ourselves or downplay our feelings. Instead of being honest, we often create elaborate scenarios that don’t reflect the true reasons behind our actions.

Why do we do this?

It’s hard to explain in just one sentence, but typically, it stems from not knowing how to let our true, authentic selves shine through.

I plan to write a post about the authentic self soon. For now, I can say that embracing your authentic self means relying on your core values and needs when making decisions. It means owning those decisions, even in the face of external pressures and expectations.

So, when considering whether a side gig is right for you, be honest with yourself.

Are you looking to occupy your mind with something other than baby wipes? Many stay at home moms miss the intellectual stimulation that work can offer. If that resonates with you, could you find that stimulation through volunteer work? While earning extra income is nice, it may not be your primary motivation.

On the other hand, if your main goal is to earn money, take a moment to evaluate your income needs and expectations. Are you seeking to make ends meet for essentials, like groceries, or are you looking to save for something special, like a family trip to Disney World?

Whatever your answer is, it will help clarify what you really want and need.

As you reflect, don’t forget to consider your core values and natural talents. Don’t underestimate your unique hobbies. Many people are successfully earning substantial income from their passions.

Be Specific (Consider Work-Life Balance)

Although we would all want to earn 42K a month, I’m guessing that if you were solely looking to get rich, you wouldn’t be looking for part-time side hustles.

Instead, it’s likely that you have a specific financial need you’re looking to fulfill.

Remaining ambiguous will not help you here. Instead, be clear and precise about your goals.

Consider statements like, “I need to earn $500 a month to save for my child’s college fund” or “I need $1000 a month to cover the increase in our mortgage and the extra monthly expenses that come with owning a second car”.

In addition to your income goals, think about the time you are willing to invest in a side income opportunity. As a stay at home mom, any time spent away from your children will require adjustments to your family’s schedule, including childcare and household responsibilities.

Who will take care of the children while you work on your side gig? Will you need to pay for childcare, or can a family member help out for a few hours? If neither option is available, do you need to find a side hustle that can be managed after hours, like in the evenings when your spouse is home or after the children go to bed? Considering your schedule is a crucial aspect of being a work at home mom.  Find out more about crafting a schedule that works for you as a working stay at home mom.

Write It Down (Make Your Vision a Reality)

You might be surprised by how writing down your thoughts makes them feel more tangible than just fleeting ideas that can easily be forgotten amid the daily hustle of life. Often, the whirlwind of daily life causes our thoughts to drift away. However, by putting them on paper, they become concrete and take on a life of their own.

There are numerous methods to spark your creativity and organize your plans. Techniques such as mind mapping and rapid ideation can help you visualize your next steps. Such methods can illuminate the path forward, making the abstract more accessible.

Engaging in this reflective process is vital. It serves as the bridge between dreaming and doing, turning your aspirations into achievable goals.

Once you understand the reasons for needing a side hustle, let’s explore the possibilities for what that side gig can be.

2. Identify Your Transferable Skills

If you need to earn income, you’ll want to find a side hustle that aligns with your abilities and skills.

Now for some moms, this is very easy, because they can just keep doing the job they were doing before having children, but on a more flexible schedule.

However, for others, balancing work and being a full-time mom may require reinventing their career. To achieve this, it’s essential for them to identify their strengths and skills.

Hard skills are straightforward to determine. These are technical or specific skills related to a certain industry, such as accounting or computer coding. While these are important to recognize, they may not necessarily help you transition into a new career. Identifying your transferable skills can be much more beneficial.

Transferable skills are, as the name implies, skills that can be applied across different jobs. Here are a few examples of transferable skills:

Career transition for moms

So, how can you identify your transferable skills? It’s simple.

All your life, you’ve been acquiring skills. Not just from your previous jobs but also from various activities you’ve participated in. Consider all the skills you’ve learned in school, your volunteer work, hobbies, or involvement in sports. Even parenting has equipped you with a ton of new skills you might not even realize you possess! After all, no one knows multitasking better than a mother juggling a newborn and a toddler with a fever!

Take some time to brainstorm all your skill sets and write them down. You can use the infographic above to help you get started.

3. Do Your Research

Side hustles for women

Research plays an essential role in any career transition, even when shifting to a part-time side gig.

Engaging in thorough research opens up a world of possibilities, helping you uncover numerous opportunities that resonate with your unique needs, skills, and aspirations.

This comprehensive process entails sifting through a ton of job descriptions. It requires exploring various career websites, and, if necessary, consulting with a career orientation specialist.

While many people tend to shy away from this tedious yet critical step, investing the time and effort into it will empower you to identify the best options tailored to your individual circumstances.

If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of options available to you, I highly recommend organizing your prospects into three primary categories. This strategy not only streamlines your options but also helps eliminate irrelevant information that may distract you from your true interests. For example, during my own journey to transition my career to align with the WSAHM lifestyle, I carefully narrowed my focus to three specific categories that harmonized with my passions, skills, and desired income: writing, editing, and translation.

Once you have narrowed your search to three categories, it’s time to investigate further and identify any gaps in your skills or knowledge that may hinder your success in your chosen field. In my case, I discovered that content writing was the most compatible with my strengths and goals. However, I soon realized that I lacked experience in content writing and a solid foundation in digital marketing. To bridge this gap,  I started writing articles in order to practice and build a portfolio. Additionally, I immersed myself in learning about digital marketing. I read as many articles as I could find, and completed several online certifications in SEO and Content Writing to boost my qualifications.

Finally, as part of your research, it’s crucial to keep in mind the dynamics of the job market. Consider the current demand for your chosen field and evaluate the level of competition you may face. Understanding these factors will be instrumental in crafting a strategic approach to your career transition and land the right side hustle.

4. Connect and Reach Out to People Who Can Help You Gain Experience and Obtain Contracts

You might be surprised at how valuable connections can be in helping you get ahead. Once you have a clear goal, don’t hesitate to put yourself out there. Ask your connections for opportunities, even if it’s on a volunteer basis at first. This can help you get started. Your connections can include past employers, family members, friends, friends of friends, former classmates, or previous colleagues.

For instance, my first paid writing gig was through the digital marketing firm where I was employed. At that time, I was working as a virtual data entry clerk. I sent my portfolio to my boss, who then offered me the chance to write a blog post for a small local business. The client liked my work, so I was given the opportunity to write another post. My writing commitments slowly grew, as did my confidence. I reached out to more contacts and gained more contracts until I no longer needed to work in data entry.

If you find yourself without any contacts in your desired field, don’t be discouraged. There are many ways to connect with others. Joining social groups, attending conferences or seminars, and even making cold contacts can help you build a network. Each of these interactions can pave the way for new opportunities and collaborations.

5. Do a Reality Check

How to land your first side gig

Once you have established a solid and consistent plan, it’s essential to take a step back and do a reality check.

This means carefully evaluating the specific steps required to launch your side gig and honestly assessing whether this venture aligns with your personal goals and circumstances.

Rather than getting caught up in inspiring success stories or societal pressures to conform, focus entirely on what is best for you. Consider your skills, resources, and passion. Then determine if pursuing this side project is the most beneficial choice for your unique situation. This will help you deduce what is truly best for you and your family.

True or false?

– Setting a formal table means using expensive china.

– Setting a casual table means using plastic utensils.

If you answered true to one or both of these statements, then you need to brush up on your table setting knowledge and you need to read this blog post!

Setting a table may seem simple, but proper place setting can elevate any dining experience. Whether you are hosting a dinner party or just having a family meal, knowing how to set a table correctly is essential.

Picture a beautifully set table—the plates, cutlery, and glassware all perfectly placed in harmony. A well-set table not only sets the tone for a meal but also enhances the overall dining experience. So, let’s break down the basic steps to table setting to help you set a table like a pro.

How to Prepare the Table

Table Setting for casual dinner

Setting a beautiful table doesn’t require magical skills; all it takes is a little love, patience, and inspiration.

Designing a table setting is a lot like designing a room. Just as interior designers combine objects, colors, and patterns to create a specific mood or feeling, the art of table setting incorporates similar elements.

Like interior design styles, place setting also has its own set of guiding principles.

There are therefore a few things to consider before focusing on the aesthetic aspects of table setting.

Essential Elements to Consider Before Designing Your Tablescape

Whether you are organizing a formal dinner, a buffet, or even a laid-back cocktail party, you must take three main elements into account before you start developing your tablescape design: your menu, the type of event you are hosting, and your guests.

1. The Menu

Your menu will establish the dinnerware and accessories you’ll need for your guests. The number of courses in your menu will also indicate the formality of the event. For instance, a five or seven-course meal is typically more formal than a meal with three courses or less.

2. The Type of Event

Next, consider the formality of the event. Does the occasion require you to host a formal or casual meal? Will it be a sit-down dinner or a more casual gathering where guests can mingle? Also, think about the size of the event—is it a small gathering or a large-scale affair? These factors will help determine your table setting requirements.

3. Your Guests

Take into account the preferences and needs of your guests. The place setting for esteemed clients or your boss will differ from that of a weekend family barbecue. Consider the type of people your guests are, your relationship with them, and any special requirements they may have. Considering these details will make the process of designing the perfect table a lot smoother.

Thinking about these 3 essential elements will help you create a tablescape that’s fitting for the occasion and the guests you are hosting.

Types of Table Setting

Basic VS Casual VS Formal Table Setting: What’s the Difference?

Table settings can be categorized into three main types: basic, casual, and formal. Each type of place setting has its own specific guidelines for placement of utensils, dishes, and glassware to create a cohesive and visually appealing dining experience.

Once you have figured-out the three main elements of your event (menu, type of event, and guests), you are ready to determine which type of place setting would be most appropriate.

What Is a Basic Table Setting?

Basic table setting is simple and relaxed, suitable for everyday meals. As the name suggests, a basic place setting consists of only the basic, or essential elements needed to consume the meal. This usually includes:

  • Dinner fork
  • Dinner knife
  • Spoon
  • Dinner plate
  • Water glass

How to Set a Basic Table

A basic table setting  is the most commonly used setup for everyday meals and informal dinner parties. It also serves as the foundation for more formal place settings.

To create this type of setting, you must start by placing the dinner plate at the center of your place setting. The fork is then placed on the left of the plate, and the knife on the right. The spoon can be placed to the right of the knife. The water glass should be positioned at the top right corner of your plate, right above the knife.

how to set a table basic

It’s important to note that the term “basic” does not refer to the quality or value of the tableware or even the overall “look” of your tablescape. The most beautiful tablescapes can be created with a basic place setting.

As a matter of fact, here are a few gorgeous examples of how you can elevate this very simple way of setting a table.

The folks at Bless’er House (above) demonstrate how even the most basic place setting can exude elegance.

Jessica Pearsall shows us how a basic place setting can feel bold and oh so beautiful when coordinated with the right colors and accessories.

Finally, Nick and Alicia (below) have beautifully crafted a romantic and dreamy tablescape using only the most basic tableware elements.

Casual Table Setting

A casual table setting starts with the same tableware as a basic place setting, but with a few more elements added to correspond with the meal presented. This usually includes a meal with more than one course, such as a 3-course meal or an even more elaborate menu.

The idea is that the more courses you offer, the more flatware and tableware your guests will need. Items for a casual place setting usually include:

  • Salad fork
  • Dinner fork
  • Dessert fork
  • Dinner knife
  • Spoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Salad plate
  • Dinner plate
  • Water glass
  • Wine glass

How to Set a Casual Table

Casual table settings are more elaborate and typically used for special occasions or fine dining. Most families will usually set a casual table setting on holidays.

To set a casual table setting, start by placing the dinner plate in the center. Position the salad and dinner forks to the left of the plate and the knife and spoon to the right. Arrange the water glass above the knife and the wine glass to the right of the water glass. Finally, add a dessert fork and a teaspoon above the plate horizontally.

Casual table settings can have a more relaxed feel or can be of the utmost elegance. Here are a few ideas to use as inspiration.

What is Formal Table Setting?

A formal table setting is characterized by several elements that contribute to a refined dining experience, including a multi-course meal served directly from the kitchen, and the observing proper etiquette for formal gatherings. When setting the table, you are essentially providing your guests with the necessary tools to adhere to the proper etiquette for the event.

Many people mistakenly believe that they are setting a formal table every time they use their best china. However, this is not always the case. In reality, the majority people will only get to be seated at a formally set table a few times in their lives.

In a formal place setting, guests are provided with all the necessary flatware, glasses, and dishes they may require for each of the meal’s courses and accompanying wine. These include:

  • Salad fork
  • Fish fork
  • Dinner fork
  • Dessert fork
  • Dinner knife
  • Butter knife
  • Spoon
  • Teaspoon
  • Dinner plate
  • Salad plate
  • Bread plate
  • Soup dish
  • Water glass
  • White wine glass
  • Red wine glass
  • Salt and pepper shakers
  • Teacup and saucer

Additional tableware, such as a seafood fork, a salad knife, a sherry glass, or a champagne glass, can be added to the formal table setting if the menu or event calls for it. However, since the formal dinner is served directly from the kitchen, additional flatware can be brought in with the serving to avoid overcrowding the table with more than 3 sets of utensils on each side of the plate.

How to Set a Formal Table

In a formal place setting, dinner plates should be placed in front of each chair, one inch from the edge of the table.

Flatware should be placed on both sides of the dinner plate—forks to the left and spoons and knives to the right.

The seafood fork, when needed, can be placed on the right side of the soup spoon. The bread plate is added on the far left and, on the far right, the teacup and saucer; although some prefer bringing the teacup and saucer later on in the evening.

Dessert flatware can be placed on the respective sides of the dinner plate or placed horizontally at the top of the dinner plate. If placed at the top, the teaspoon faces left and the dessert fork faces right (see picture below).

Correct formal table setting

It can clearly be seen why most people do not set a formal table every time they host a dinner party. A formal table setting requires an intricate meal and wine selection that just doesn’t correspond with contemporary traditions.

For example, a classic French meal consists of 13 courses. It’s hard to picture today’s working families going to such an extent every time they host a Friday night dinner with friends! Nevertheless, knowing proper manners and etiquette will help you to play with the guidelines and ultimately, host better dinner parties.

Proper Table Setting

Setting the perfect table for any occasion is a simple yet crucial detail that can elevate your event to the next level. By following the tips outlined in this guide, you can create a beautiful and inviting tablescape that will impress your guests. Knowing the official table setting guidelines also allows you to get creative and have fun with your place settings.

If you’re a remote worker, you probably spend a large part of your day sitting in your home office space, which, let’s face it, may be causing bad posture. If you’ve been experiencing discomfort in your neck or struggling with a sore back, it might be time to consider creating an ergonomic setup at home.

As a working stay at home mom often working at odd times during the day—or night, I understand the challenges of spending long hours at my desk. Many work from home moms or dads are struggling to create a home office space that is comfortable and promotes productivity.

If you are new to working from home, you might have set up a temporary workspace. However, if the temporary setup has become more of a permanent situation, it’s time to reassess your home workspace.

The Importance of an Ergonomic Setup at Home

ergonomic workspace setup

It’s been several decades since health authorities discovered the impact of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are injuries or disorders of the muscles, nerves, tendons, joints, cartilage, and spinal discs.

Examples of work-related musculoskeletal disorders can be sprains, strains, tissue tears, back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome.  MSDs account for an estimated 130 million healthcare encounters in the United States alone.

Research also shows that the “estimated costs associated with lost days and compensation claims related to musculoskeletal disorders range from $13 billion to $20 billion annually.

According to Harvard Medical School, poor posture also results in abdominal pressure which causes incontinence, constipation, and heartburn.

Finally, studies have shown that  slumped posture can activate or maintain a negative mood and increase stress levels.

Needless to say, the potential side-effects of having a workspace that induces poor posture are non-negligeable.

So how can we ensure better posture while working?

In comes ergonomics.

What Is Ergonomics?

The University of North Carolina defines ergonomics as: “the study of people in their working environment. More specifically, an ergonomist (pronounced like economist) designs or modifies the work to fit the worker, not the other way around. The goal is to eliminate discomfort and risk of injury due to work.

If you don’t have an ergonomist at hand, don’t despair. Here are 5 simple tips on how to create an ergonomic workspace at home.

5 Tips to Create the Ultimate Ergonomic Work Setup at Home

1. Evaluate the Way You Tend to Sit

best ergonomic setup

To enhance your posture while working, start by evaluating your sitting position. Do you tend to slouch or lean forward or sideways while you work?

As a general rule, your knees and hips should be aligned at a 90-degree angle. Feet should be placed flat on the floor (you can use a footrest if necessary). Forearms and wrists should have proper support and be at the level of your elbows. Shoulders should be relaxed.

2. Remember to Consider the Height of Your Work Surface

It’s easy to forget about the height of the surface that you work on. Although your workspace can’t always be ideal,  it is essential to adjust it as much as possible according to your needs.

For example, a work surface that is too low or too high will force you to adopt poor posture. If your wrists and forearms remain straight when using your keyboard or mouse, your surface is at the correct height.

3. Rearrange Your Equipment

Whatever your job is, you are probably using a variety of materials, tools, or equipment to get you through the day. Whether it’s a mouse and keyboard, pens, brushes, or a screwdriver, it’s important to have these tools in the right places to avoid repetitive movements. How?

Start by evaluating your daily tasks and the materials or equipment used most often throughout the day. Then place them in strategic locations in your workspace. To do this, organize your space into 3 areas:

  • An easily reachable area for frequently used items
  • A second area at arm’s length for less frequently used items
  • A third area that requires trunk movement (lean forward or to the sides) to reach occasionally used objects

Are you working in a small space? Check out this article from the RentBlog, which offers a load of tips on how to set up your home office in limited square footage.

4. Don’t Underestimate the Placement of Your Computer Monitor

Too many people’s computer monitors are at the wrong place and height on their desk. This can create a whole bunch of unnecessary aches and pains. A poorly located monitor can be the cause of headaches, neck and shoulder pains, eye irritation, and even blurred vision.

To avoid all this, it is important to place your monitor at roughly an arm’s length away from you. It should not be placed at an angle, but rather straight in front of you.

The top of the screen should also be slightly lower than eye level. To determine this, when looking straight at your screen (in the sitting position described above), the address bar should be at eye level.

If, like me, you work with a laptop, consider investing in a laptop stand, an external keyboard, and mouse to create a better ergonomic setup at home.

5. Don’t Hold the Phone!

If your job requires you to spend several consecutive minutes talking on the phone, use a headset or the speaker feature on your phone. Holding a phone to your ear or, worse, cradling the phone between your shoulder and head, can cause or worsen MSDs.

An Ergonomic Setup at Home Is Great, but Here Are a Few More Things to Consider

ergo desk setup

Although ergonomics is an essential aspect to consider when creating your workspace, there are a few other factors to take into account to ensure you stay healthy when working from home.

Avoid High Repetition of the Same Movements

Musculoskeletal disorders occur when overusing the same body parts for long periods and without taking enough rest time.

To avoid injuries, try to vary repetitive tasks as often as possible to avoid fatigue and excessive strain on the limbs involved.

Pick the Right Room for the Job

Trust me, I know that square footage is a high commodity, and sometimes the only available space left for your home office may be a dungeon-looking room in the basement.

However, it’s crucial to select a well-ventilated space with natural light.

Additionally, a space that is too warm or too cold can cause unnecessary distractions, discomfort, and even ailments that could impede your ability to work effectively.

Remember to Take Small Breaks Throughout Your Workday

In addition to hurting your productivity, working long hours without a rest period (especially in a seated position) challenges physical stamina.

The human body is not designed to stay in a sitting position for several hours. Regardless of how comfortable the posture is, sitting for prolonged periods will lead to all sorts of physical discomforts.

Plan regular breaks to move your joints and stretch your muscles. Finally, please remember that taking the time to go outside to breathe fresh air is just as important!

Work-life balance

Your health begins with healthy lifestyle habits. Therefore, creating an ergonomic workspace at home is a crucial step toward better health.

This is especially important for working moms like myself, who are striving to balance work and family life. Take the time to assess your workspace and make the necessary adjustments to suit your needs.

Also, it’s important to note that the advice in this post is general and may need to be tailored to your specific situation. If you’re experiencing symptoms of MSDs, it’s best to consult your doctor or healthcare provider.

Are you looking to freshen up the look of your home or want to spruce up your interior design style but don’t know where to start? With so many choices, styles and decor options, it can feel overwhelming.

Maybe you’ve tried an online search to find out what you like, but terms like “desert modern”, “cottagecore” or “monochromatic” mean absolutely nothing to you.

I hear you. You’re not looking to learn a new language, you just want to find the look that’s right for you!

Whether you are longing to create a more sleek aesthetic, a timeless gem or a charming, fun interior, there is a style to suit every taste and preference. You just need to figure out what your interior design style is.

What Is an Interior Design Style?

An interior design style is the basic foundation that defines the character and ambiance that is aimed to be achieved in a space. Every interior design style has its own set of guiding principles that influence the design goals and the methods used to achieve them.

Through unique design elements such as colors, finishes, and types of materials, a specific aesthetic can be achieved, allowing the creation of a space that reflects the dweller’s personality, values and way of life.

But is it really important for our personal space to reflect who we are? Actually, it is!

Recent studies have highlighted the significant impact our environment has on our emotions, behavior, and physical well-being. It has actually been proven that home aesthetics play a crucial role in influencing our daily emotional, psychological, and even physical health!

Therefore, by decorating with purpose and incorporating features that resonate with our identity, values and lifestyle, we are actually transforming our living spaces into sanctuaries that can enhance our overall well-being and strengthen our connection to our surroundings.

Interior Design Styles Defined

Understanding different interior design styles can help us uncover personal preferences and craft spaces that reflect our individuality.

By familiarizing ourselves with the distinct techniques used to achieve each style’s design goals, we can apply this insight to guide our selection of design elements like paint colors, furnishings, and decor.

With a deep understanding of a particular decorating style, we can also deviate from conventions to create a truly distinctive space.

As you can imagine, there are countless possibilities when it comes to selecting an interior design style. So, to make things easier, I’ve decided to group them into 4 categories: minimalist, maximalist, conventional and fusion.

Now, I’m sure that any interior designer reading this has probably already started cringing, but hear me out!

I am aware that some of these categories are already interior design styles of their own. However, grouping them as such will allow readers to get some structure in a myriad of possibilities and terms they may not yet understand.

So, without further ado, here is everything you need to know about the fundamentals of interior design styles and the 13 most popular interior design styles for 2024.

13 Most Popular Design Styles

Minimalist Interior Design Styles

Minimalist Interior Design

I’m grouping the first 3 interior design styles under the “minimalist” category. These are:

Minimalism is a type of abstract art that emerged in the United States during the 20th century. It is characterized by artworks made up of basic geometric shapes.

Now, although minimalism is not directly related to the following interior design styles, it does share the principle of reducing the aesthetic elements in their purest form: clean, simple lines exempt of unnecessary embellishment.

Here’s what comes out of this idea:

1. Modern Interior Design

What is a modern interior design style

The History of Modern Interior Design

You can trace the origins of modern interior design to the Bauhaus German school of design and subsequent art movement in the early 20th century.

Bauhaus emphasized the combination of form and function, seeking to unify art, craft, and technology to create practical yet aesthetically pleasing objects.  The movement prioritized simplicity, functionality, clean lines, and geometric shapes.

Modern Interior Design Style Today

Modern interior design incorporates clean lines, minimalist furniture, and a neutral color palette to create a sleek and contemporary aesthetic. Taking the expression “less is more” to a next level, the focus in modern design is on simplicity and functionality, nothing more. Sticking as much as possible to a monochromatic palette, the emphasis is on open spaces and natural light, rather than color.

Key elements of this sleek aesthetic include simple geometric shapes (square, rectangle and circle), natural stones, metal accents, with a touch of textures to add visual interest. Technology integration and sustainable materials are also often incorporated in the space to enhance the overall modern design concept and its nod to technological progress.

Modern Design Is Your Thing If…

  • Natural materials such as wood, stone, leather or glass are a must in your space.
  • You prefer a unified neutral color palette, staying away from any kind of bold color.
  • Open floor plan that is free of any kind of clutter, knick-knacks or accessories is the only option for you.
  • You like clean lines and low, multi-functional furnishings.
  • Integrating technology into your living space is your heaven.

2. Mid-Century Modern Design

The History of Mid-Century Modern Design

Mid-century modern interior design is a style that emerged in the United States in the mid-20th century, as a response to the realities of a post-World War II society.

The end of World War II gave rise to a wave of prosperity, technological progress, mass production and consumerism. With this age of expansion, came suburbanization, where affluent families were moving away from the city and into new suburban constructions.

Architects and designers needed to merge this new age of mass production with the increasing sense of American pride, thus giving rise to the mid-century modern design style.

Mid-Century Modern Design Style Today

Mid-century modern design is characterized by its emphasis on aesthetic functionality and creating a stylish balance in the home.

Its minimalist approach to decor does not sacrifice the simple elegance that comes with a mid-century modern aesthetic, finding beauty in elements such as natural, rich woods, bold colors, and complex geometric patterns (think hexagon-tile backsplash). Furnishings often feature tapered legs, sleek surfaces, and innovative materials like plastic and metal.

One of the key features of mid-century modern design, is the use of open floor plans that flow seamlessly with the outdoors, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces.

Overall, mid-century design seeks to create a harmonious blend of form and function, evoking a sense of timeless sophistication and modernity to the living space.

Mid-Century Modern Design Is Your Thing If…

  • Mixing materials and textures such as different types of rich colored woods, glass, metals, and even plastic is your kinda thing.
  • You prefer simple lines over unnecessary extra features or embellishment.
  • “Function over beauty” is your interior design motto.
  • You melt for that bold pop of color or geometric pattern in an otherwise toned-down space.

3. Scandinavian Design

The History of Scandinavian Design

Scandinavian design is a flagrant example of how culture and our natural environment can influence interior design.

Like in other parts of the world, the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland were also influenced by the minimalist ideologies of the early 20th century.

However, due to their long, dreary winters, they needed to reflect as much sunlight as possible indoors.

This resulted in white, light and airy feel to the design. Moreover, Nordic lifestyle rituals such as hygge, rendered the aesthetic a lot more cozy than its cousin, the modern interior design style.

Scandinavian Interior Design Style Today

Cozy simplicity, minimalism, and functionality are the terms that best characterize Scandinavian design.

Like its cousins Modern and Mid-century modern designs, “Scandi” also emphasizes clean lines and natural materials. However, its focus is on creating spaces that are both aesthetically pleasing and practical, with an emphasis on light and a sense of airiness.

Striving to be a timeless aesthetic, Scandinavian design principles prioritize quality craftsmanship and sustainable practices, resulting in furniture and decor that are both beautiful and durable.

This design style has gained popularity worldwide for its ability to create inviting and cozy interiors that promote a sense of calm and tranquility.

Scandinavian Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • When you get home, you want to feel like your space is giving you a big hug.
  • You like simple, clean lines, but don’t want your space to feel stark, cold and uninviting.
  • Natural elements are and will always be a big part of your design aesthetic.
  • Bright and airy is the only option for you.

Maximalist Interior Design Styles

Maximalist Interior design

Now that we’ve seen a few interior design styles that follow minimalist ideologies, let’s look at their opposites: the maximalist design styles.

Maximalist design has popped up throughout history any time the extremely wealthy wanted to display their riches through overelaborate, ornate decor.

The rise of the bourgeoisie in France is a great example of this. A 19th century bourgeois home needed to demonstrate high class and riches in order for the family to maintain their social status. As a result of this, elaborate details and complex patterns were preferred because they looked expensive.

Although maximalist interior design is actually a design style on its own that has made a comeback in recent years through bold colors, playful forms and highly individual design, we’ll focus on its popular cousins:

4. Bohemian Interior Design

boho style
Project by Ann Cox Design

The History of Bohemian Design

The bohemian or “boho” interior design style began in France in the 1800s, as a backalsh to the lavish realities of the bourgeoisie.

It was an age of promiscuity and flamboyance for Parisian artists and non-conformists, and their eccentricity reflected in their interiors as well. Highly influenced by the Romani people (gypsies), they valued individuality, unconventional viewpoints and lots of creativity.

The “boho” style resurfaced about a hundred years later in the late 1960s to challenge the societal norms of consumerism. Although still influenced by the design elements originally found in the 19th century Parisian bohemian style, this “new” bohemian style also integrated elements of Asian, Latin American and African cultures and design.

Bohemian Interior Design Style Today

Vibrant and unique, bohemian interior design embraces a free-spirited, “anything goes” kind of aesthetic.

The style is characterized by combining colors, patterns, and textures in intentionally mismatched elements that somehow “go together”.

Through the use of vintage furniture, global accents, and handcrafted elements, this style creates a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. Natural materials, such as wood and rattan, are often featured alongside plants and greenery to bring a sense of nature indoors.

The use of floor cushions, layered rugs, and oversized throws contributes to the ultra laid-back feel of this style.

A final touch of personality through artwork and displayed personal souvenirs add that creativity oh-so encouraged in the bohemian design aesthetic.

Boho Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You dream of letting your imagination drive the design choices in your home, no matter how unconventional the result may be.
  • Blending different patterns and textures that do not traditionally go together is your kinda thing.
  • Experimenting with bold color palettes does not intimidate you.
  • You’ll choose handcrafted over factory-made every time.
  • Artificial plants or plastic decor will never enter your home.
  • Vintage furnishings are a must in your space.

5. Eclectic Interior Design

The History of Eclectic Interior Design

Eclecticism, from the Greek eklektikos which means “choosing the best”, is the approach of combining the principals of several doctrines or ideologies to create a new system of thought.

In architecture and, consequently, in interior design, eclecticism first emerged during the Victorian era. The movement involved combining elements from past historical styles to produce something fresh and unique.

Also, colonialism played a significant cultural role during the Victorian era. The literature of the time sparked a widespread interest in exotic goods from faraway places. This led to the integration of imported products from China, India, and Persia into home decor collections.

Eclectic Interior Design Style Today

Eclectic design combines various elements, patterns, and textures from other interior design styles to create a unique and personalized space. It involves mixing different aesthetics, eras, and color schemes to achieve a harmonious, yet visually stimulating look.

Eclectic interiors often feature a blend of vintage and modern pieces, unexpected decor accents, and a bold use of patterns and colors. This style allows for creative freedom and individual expression, resulting in a vibrant and dynamic living environment that showcases the dweller’s personality and refined taste.

Eclectic VS Bohemian Design

Although often compared to the bohemian design style, eclectic design involves intentionally collecting and blending colors, patterns, and pieces to achieve a carefully curated look. In contrast, bohemian design typically involves utilizing existing mismatched items to create an aesthetically pleasing space.

Eclectic Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You like to incorporate multiple design styles into your space.
  • You’re all about rich colors, mixed with a variety of patterns and textures.
  • Integrating timeless, vintage pieces in your space is a must.
  • To you, art is a worthy investment.
  • As a world traveler, you love to incorporate your international flair into your decor.

6. Art Deco Interior Design

What defines Art Deco design
Project by Greg Natale Design

The History of Art Deco Design

Art Deco was all the rage in the early 20th century, but it was most popular during the 1920s and 1930s. The style drew inspiration from various art movements and design trends of the time, including Cubism.

The Art Deco aesthetic influenced architecture, interior design, fashion, and visual arts. It was characterized by geometric shapes, vibrant colors, and a focus on luxury and modernity.

Art Deco design fell out of style in the 50s, making space for the mid-century modern trend. The style is however gaining back its popularity in recent years with a more contemporary take on its ultra glamorous and lavish beginnings.

Art Deco Interior Design Style Today

Dramatic glamor and sophistication are what best describe the Art Deco aesthetic. Through bold geometric shapes, luxurious materials, rich colors, metallic accents, and intricate patterns, this style has everything it needs to create a space worthy of a glamorous, old-Hollywood movie set.

Art Deco interiors often feature sleek furniture, glossy finishes, and dramatic lighting to create a sense of opulence and modernity. Both elegant and irresistibly striking, this design aesthetic is all about striking a balance between generating an outstanding visual impact and keeping a focus on symmetry.

Art Deco continues to be a popular choice for those seeking a chic and timeless interior style.

Art Deco Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You’re into the finer things in life.
  • Chic, luxurious and shiny are your go-to words when defining your space.
  • A large, statement chandelier does not intimidate you.
  • You want your space to feel sexy and sophisticated.
  • Bold, geometric patterns make you weak at the knees.
  • You’ll choose silk and velvet over linen any day of the week.

Conventional Interior Design Styles

Unlike the design styles in the minimalist or maximalist categories, the design styles  in the category that I like to call “the conventional interior design styles” are not looking to break from the traditional standards of aesthetics. Rather, they aim to create a beautiful ambiance by relying on long-established principles and methods of interior design.

The design styles in this category include:

Traditional Interior Design

The History of Traditional Interior Design

Howard Pyle once wrote: “Art is the expression of those beauties and emotions that stir the human soul.” And like he so eloquently said, humans have always found meaning and emotion in beautiful things. Even in ancient times, people filled their home with aesthetically pleasing objects that inspired them.

Traditional interior design is influenced by this idea, tracing its roots all the way back to ancient civilizations such as Mesopotamia and Egypt, where both functionality and ornate elements were put together to create impressive living spaces.

From the rich tapestries of the Renaissance period to the intricate wood carvings of the Victorian era, traditional design has evolved over time to reflect changing tastes and cultural influences.

Today, traditional interior design is influenced by the classical architectural features of 18th and 19th century design. These features include luxurious fabrics and furniture pieces that exude elegance and sophistication.

Traditional Interior Design Style Today

Traditional interior design is all about blending classic elegance and timeless beauty with a feeling of serenity and perpetual calm. Its embrace of history and heritage does not prevent it from creating a warm and inviting space.

How does it achieve this perfect balance? By combining the sophistication found in rich fabrics, ornate patterns, and antique furniture, with the sense of collected effect caused by neutral color palettes, dark wood finishes and details like molding and trim.

Traditional Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You prefer investing in furniture that will last you a lifetime.
  • Trends and fads are not your thing. You like your home to feel timeless.
  • Architectural details such as crown molding, columns, and lighting coves make you weak at the knees.
  • Rich, dark hardwood floors are a must in your home.
  • Sophisticated yet familiar is how you want your home to feel.
  • Symmetry is mandatory in your space.

Rustic Interior Design

Modern Rustic Design Style
Project by Studio Jake Arnold

The History of Rustic Interior Design

The rustic style in interior design emerged more out of necessity, than a means of creative expression.

When early American settlers created their homesteads in rural lands located far from cities, they often traveled with little to no furniture or supplies. When they finally arrived to their new land, they needed to quickly build their homes and essential furniture with local natural materials such as clay, stone, and, of course, wood.

The raw and rugged elements of their interiors were far different from the more sophisticated architecture and design found in the cities of the era. Nevertheless, the raw character found in those simple establishments produced a warm and inviting atmosphere still coveted today.

Rustic Interior Design Style Today

Rustic interior design has come a long way from the pioneers’ need to shelter their families. Today, the style embraces all the natural elements to create truly beautiful and stylish spaces.

The organic feel produced by features like raw wood, stone, and earthy colors, creates a warm, relaxing and inviting space.

Bringing the outdoors in is also a design goal of the rustic style, as well as mixing different textures with new and vintage furnishings to create a space that is unpretentious all the while being full of character.

Rustic Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You’re a sucker for reclaimed wood—the older the better.
  • To you, the perfect home is a log-home, or at least one that looks like a log-home.
  • When you get home, all you want to do is kick your boots off and sit by a crackling fire.
  • You own a collection of vintage glassware, dishes, and anything else vintage you can get your hands on.
  • Sturdy, natural fabrics like burlap, linen, cotton, and wool are totally your thing.

Modern Farmhouse Interior Design

The History of Modern Farmhouse Interior Design

The history of traditional farmhouse design dates back centuries, originating from the practical needs of agricultural families. These structures were built with functionality in mind, featuring simple layouts and durable materials suited for rural living. Elements such as pitched roofs, wide porches, and large windows were incorporated for both utility and aesthetics. Over time, regional variations emerged, reflecting cultural influences and available resources.

Then, in the early 2000s, the Modern Farmhouse style emerged, combining the traditional farmhouse aesthetics with modern conveniences and design.

At the turn of the millennium, there was a surge in technological advancements, particularly in the fields of robotics, the Internet, and mobile phones. However, the more people were getting “virtually connected”, the more they felt disconnected from their natural environment and cultural roots. As a result, many individuals began yearning for a simpler way of life. This nostalgia for “the good old days” started to manifest itself in people’s homes and living spaces, making space for the modern farmhouse trend to rise.

The modern farmhouse interior design style would not have been the same without the influence of home renovation experts Chip and Joanna Gaines. The signature style of the “Fixer Upper” stars blended rustic and traditional farmhouse elements with contemporary and even industrial design, creating a harmonious fusion between old and new. Their method of integrating architectural features such as shiplap walls and reclaimed wood beams into any kind of space, allowed even the most urban dwellers to add a touch of the countryside into their homes.

Classic Farmhouse VS Modern Farmhouse Design

When you think of a farmhouse, it’s hard not to imagine a picturesque 1800s American farmhouse. The traditional farmhouse style borrows a lot from the rustic interior design style, but it adds more feminine touches, such as floral patterns and softer fabrics.

Here’s an image of a traditional farmhouse design. While some elements might appear similar to modern farmhouse design, it feels much cozier and more traditional than the example of a modern farmhouse design shown in the image above. Also, modern farmhouse design tends to gravitate towards open concept layouts, whereas the classic farmhouse design leans on a more traditional layout of separation between living spaces.

Modern Farmhouse Interior Design Style Today

Modern Farmhouse design style is characterized by a blend of contemporary elements with rustic, traditional features. It combines clean lines and neutral colors with natural textures such as wood and metal, to create a warm and inviting space. This style often incorporates vintage pieces and reclaimed materials to add a sense of history and nostalgia to a space.

The overall modern farmhouse aesthetic is a perfect balance of modern simplicity and rustic charm, creating a cozy yet stylish atmosphere in any home. In recent years, the style has moved away from the “American homestead” look, getting inspiration from both the England and French countryside, creating a timeless appeal that exudes both old-world charm and sophistication.

Modern Farmhouse Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • High ceilings, open spaces, reclaimed wood beams, steel framed windows, and at least one textured wall surface are all must-haves in your dream home.
  • You feel that mason jars are perfectly acceptable decor items.
  • Filling your home with wall signs, jute rugs, dried flowers, hand woven baskets, and candle lanterns makes you happy.
  • When people visit your home, you want them to feel transported to a place that is somewhere between a NYC loft and a cottage in the countryside.

Coastal Interior Design

What is coastal style interior design?
Project by Amy Tyndall Design

The History of Coastal Interior Design

It’s hard to pin down a specific era when coastal design emerged. Humans have always lived near water, and the beauty of this natural element has most likely influenced their interiors since the beginning of time.

That being said, although living near water was once a thing of necessity, in the last few centuries, it has become a luxury for the wealthy. The construction of luxurious beach and lake vacation homes has had a more significant impact on the coastal design style than the original fishermen who first settled near the water.

After all, coastal towns like the Hamptons, Sidi Bou Said, Key West, or Positano are known for the unique interior design and architecture that accompanies the opulent properties that grace their renowned shorelines.

Coastal interior design integrates natural elements, light color palettes, and casual furnishings to evoke a sense of the seaside. Incorporating materials like weathered wood, wicker, and linen, this style creates a relaxed and airy atmosphere.

The color scheme mainly consists of soft blues, greens, and sandy neutrals, which enhance the feeling of tranquility and serenity.

To further reinforce the coastal theme, nautical elements such as rope accents, striped patterns, and seashell decorations can be added.

Additionally, light and breezy fabrics like sheer curtains and slipcovered furniture add to the overall laid-back aesthetic, making coastal design a popular choice for those seeking a calming and beach-inspired home environment.

Coastal Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • The sight of a billowing white curtain swaying gently in the warm breeze is your idea of paradise.
  • Bright and airy is your thing, but your space needs to feel sophisticated.
  • You melt for a color palette that combines soft blues and greens.
  • No matter where you are in the world, your heart always yearns for the beach.

Fusional Interior Design Styles

Popular Interior Design Styles

In the final design style category, we will be exploring what I refer to as the “fusional” category.

These design styles are all about combining elements of one or more styles to achieve a trendy and often edgy ambiance. The aim is to create spaces that are both stylish and up-to-date.

The design styles in this category include:

Industrial Interior Design

loft interior design
Project by AODK Architecture

The History of Industrial Interior Design

The industrial interior design style originated in the 1960s when old factories and industrial spaces were repurposed into living spaces, emphasizing raw materials found in those existing spaces.

This design aesthetic embraces imperfections and celebrates utilitarian objects like metal furniture and iron lighting fixtures. The industrial style gained popularity in the early 2000s with the rise of loft living and the desire for a modern, urban look. Today, it remains a popular choice for homeowners and businesses seeking a current and edgy atmosphere.

Industrial Interior Design Style Today

The industrial interior design style is characterized by a raw and unfinished aesthetic that showcases exposed brick walls, steel beams, and concrete floors. The color palette usually consists of neutral tones like gray, black, and white. Open spaces and high ceilings are common features, often incorporating elements like metal light fixtures and reclaimed wood furniture. This style embraces the beauty of imperfections and often highlights mechanical details like pipes and ductwork.

Industrial design often incorporates vintage or rustic items to create a rough, edgy aesthetic. Some designers will argue that the style combines modern and farmhouse aesthetics.

Industrial Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • You’re all about highlighting the structural character of a space.
  • To you, the higher the ceilings, the better.
  • Others might like shiny things, but you love untreated, raw finishes.
  • Natural fabrics are your thing.
  • You love repurposing materials to furnish your space.

Contemporary Interior Design

The History of Contemporary Interior Design

In the 1970s, a new interior design style emerged, known as contemporary design. This style was characterized by a fusion of various popular aesthetics of the time, drawing inspiration from Modernism, Postmodernism, De-constructivism, Art Deco, Futurism, and more.

Over the years, contemporary interior design has evolved as a forward-thinking and on-trend style that incorporates new ideas and continuous innovations.

Contemporary Interior Design Style Today

The contemporary style combines various popular styles of the moment to achieve a look that is unquestionably “in”.

Unlike other styles that are often rooted in a particular look, time, and spirit, the key to contemporary design is that it is ever-evolving. This means that a contemporary home will evolve over time, and, without regular updates to current trends, it can become outdated quickly.

Contemporary Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • Following the latest fads and trends is your joie de vivre.
  • Creating a space that feels both fresh and modern is important to you.
  • You’re all about the latest innovations.
  • Integrating tech in your space is a must.
  • To you, design is all about looking to the future.

Transitional Interior Design

The History of Transitional Interior Design

Transitional interior design combines traditional and contemporary elements to create a timeless aesthetic that adapts to evolving tastes. This design style emerged in the late 20th century as a response to the rigidity of traditional design and the starkness of modern design.

Transitional Interior Design Style Today

Transitional interior design is a popular style that seamlessly blends traditional and contemporary elements to create a timeless and elegant aesthetic. The core idea behind this design style is to combine the warmth and classic elements of traditional design with the clean lines and simplicity of modern design, resulting in a sophisticated, versatile, and balanced interior space that appeals to a wide range of tastes.

Some of the key features of transitional interiors include neutral color palettes that create a calm and soothing atmosphere, understated patterns that add texture and depth, and a mix of materials and finishes that create visual interest and contrast. Furniture pieces in transitional design are often a combination of both classic and contemporary styles, creating a cohesive and harmonious look.

Transitional design also emphasizes comfort and functionality, with a focus on creating a welcoming and inviting space that feels both familiar and fresh. This is achieved through the use of comfortable seating, soft lighting, and thoughtful accessories and decor. Overall, transitional interior design is a versatile and elegant style that can be customized to suit a variety of preferences and lifestyles.

Transitional Interior Design Is Your Thing If…

  • Combining traditional architectural features like crown molding with more modern furnishings is your idea of a dream home.
  • The look of a staged model home is exactly what you would like your home to look like.
  • You can’t really decide on any specific look or style.
  • Versatility, comfort, and functionality are all important factors to you when designing a space.

Combining Interior Design Styles Together

Understanding the techniques used to achieve different interior design styles can help you create new styles that match your taste. In fact, many trending styles today are a result of blending different aesthetics together.

For example, combining the rustic vibes of the southwestern United States with the bright and airy simplicity of Scandinavian design creates a style known as “desert modern”.

Likewise, merging the organic, airy energy of coastal design, with the laid-back bohemian aesthetic and a touch of retro that comes with the mid-century modern style, results in a style called “California boho”.

A final example can be found in blending elements from the traditional farmhouse style with earthly elements like stones and rocks found in rustic design, then adding a dash of bohemian aesthetic with a sprinkle of hyper-feminine touches and you create a style known as “cottagecore”.

Unveiling the Essence of Different Interior Design Styles

As you can see, the possibilities are infinite. All you need to do is find the elements that speak to you and your lifestyle preferences and dare to take a chance on style. Perhaps you will unleash your creativity and transform your space into a personalized sanctuary that truly feels like home.

Are you struggling to find an interior design style that speaks to you and your family? I’d love to help you find your way in the myriad of design possibilities!

Parenting tips to help moms

Have you done a little online research on parenting lately? If you did, you’ve probably landed on hundreds of articles describing what psychologists call “Parenting Styles”. But what are they? Skip to Understanding Parenting Styles or keep reading to discover how I figured out mine.

My eldest child was born at about 1am on a cold January night after 29 hours of labor and almost 10 years of marriage.

My husband R and I put off parenthood for all sorts of reasons. Our excuses might have appeared as sound and well-thought rationales to our friends and families, but the truth is, I was scared.

I was absolutely terrified of becoming a mother. And the long and agonizing physical labor it took to bring my child out into the world, was definitely representative of the difficult spiritual and psychological work I did in order to become open to motherhood and become pregnant.

It’s funny to think that I was so scared of becoming a parent. Now, as a mother of 3, I often pray for a number 4. But alas, I guess age has gotten the best of me.

Going back to my first pregnancy and the birth of my little E (who is not so little anymore), I remember how all my focus was on me: my fears, my pain, my learning, my lack of sleep.

I loved her as I had never loved anyone before. Yet, my attention was solely focused on my performance as a caregiver (or lack thereof). As most new mothers, I felt completely inadequate, asking myself why in the world would the Good Lord put someone like me in charge of caring for a perfect little creature like her.

Luckily, this constant torment toned down when my daughter developed colic.

Discovering My Role as a Parent

How to be a good parent

Now, of course, colic certainly isn’t a fortunate event. However, this event awakened me to the role I was supposed to play in my children’s lives.

One particular evening she was having quite a strong colic episode and she seemed in a lot of discomfort. Desperately, I looked for solutions that would terminate this problem.

I looked to science, searching online for remedies and relief, but nothing worked. Turned to my husband, who was as perplexed as I was.  I prayed to God, who, I suspect, held back with a watchful eye to see if I would step up to the plate.

Glancing at her little face that seemed to be in agonizing pain, there was nothing I could do. There were no solutions or rationales. There was my baby girl, and she looked completely miserable.

That’s when this thought hit me like a flash. It wasn’t about me or what I could or could not do. I was just her mother. All I could do was hold her, be with her, and get through this thing with her.

Being a Parent

I would love to say that the incident described above turned me into an ideal parent, but that would be a flat out lie. I still occasionally find myself pestering my husband at bedtime, rehashing the events of the day and asking him, in a thousand different ways, if I should have done things differently. To which he often replies “it’s just kids stuff, they’ll grow out of it” or, my favorite, “you’re overthinking it”.

Like me, I’m sure most parents question their parenting abilities from time to time. Maybe even worry about the long-term impact their “mistakes” might have on their children. This is especially true when we feel stressed, exhausted, or when we’ve had a really tough day.

If you’re amongst those who, like me, experience this recurring kind of self-interrogation, a good place to start is to look into your parenting style.

Understanding Parenting Styles

Parenting styles pros and cons

Parenting style refers to how a parent raises their children, including the methods, beliefs, and actions they use to nurture, discipline and teach their kids.

Each parent has their own, unique way of interacting with and directing their children, and this relationship typically shapes a child’s morals, values, and behavior.

By recognizing and understanding their parenting style, parents can actively work towards building a strong and healthy relationship with their children, while also being more conscious of the impact their style has on their children’s growth and overall development.

It’s important to understand that, although most parents will have a dominant parenting style, their approach to parenting will also be influenced by their own upbringing, cultural background and socioeconomic background.

Here is a simple definition of each parenting style. To make these definitions a little more easy (and fun) to understand, I have presented them through a popular movie parent.

Authoritarian Parenting Style

What is an Authoritarian Parent

Authoritarian parents are characterized by their strict rules and high demands. They expect obedience and often use punishment as a means of discipline. This style does not emphasize open communication. Instead, it tends to result in children who may be obedient, but lack self-esteem and social competence.

Example of an Authoritarian Movie Parent

To get an idea of this type of parenting, think The Little Mermaid. King Triton, Ariel’s father, has a set of strict rules that he expects his subjects (including his children) to obey. When his rules are broken, he is willing to use severe punishment.

Although he means well and cares for Ariel very much, he is not open to understand or accept Ariel’s viewpoint. She is to follow his command because he knows what’s best for her. After all, he is the almighty king and ruler of the ocean.

The problem with King Triton’s parenting style is that, eventually Ariel grows up. Rejecting his authority, she turns to the dark side (the evil Ursula) to create herself an identity other than the one enforced by her father.

However, once she’s out of King Triton’s dominion (the ocean) and lands into the real world, she has no voice, or any kind of acceptable social skills for all that matters. Out in the real world, Ariel is incapable of functioning as an independent individual. She is left to rely on the prince to take her in, care for her and, essentially, show her how to behave appropriately. Ouch!

Authoritative Parenting Style

What is Authoritative Parenting

Authoritative parents are known for setting clear rules and expectations for their children while still being responsive and nurturing. They are warm and supportive, yet also have high expectations for their children’s behavior. This style encourages independence and self-discipline in children, as they are given the freedom to express themselves while also understanding the boundaries set by their parents.

Although the majority of experts in the field of psychology agree that authoritative parenting produces the healthiest outcomes for children, it is important to note that this parenting style isn’t perfect.

Example of an Authoritative Parent in Movies

An example of this type of parenting can be found in the character of George Banks in the classic movie Father of the Bride.

Although a supportive and loving father, the extremely high expectations he places onto his daughter Annie, make it impossible for him to accept her choice of husband. It’s the classic case of “no one is good enough for my exceptionally perfect girl”.

In turn, whenever Annie is faced with conflict, she seeks for her father’s validation and approval, because who could ever achieve “perfection”.

Permissive Parenting Style

What is Permissive Parenting

Permissive parents are lenient and indulgent, often avoiding confrontation and allowing their children to make their own decisions. They are nurturing and loving, but are reluctant to set firm boundaries. This style can lead to children lacking self-control and struggling with authority figures.

Example of a Permissive Parent in Movies

The character of Kate Baker (the Mom) in the film Cheaper by the Dozen embodies this type of parenting perfectly.

Kate is the permissive parent par excellence. She is nurturing and loving toward all her 12 kids. However, she fails to create any kind of boundaries or rules in the household (probably because she is severely outnumbered).

Beside her constant exhaustion and the frat-house-party-looking home, there is one main problem with Kate’s parenting style. Although seemingly close, the members of the Baker family are incapable of looking out for each other. They are far too concerned with their own personal needs and desires.

As a result, the family is unable to work as a unit. When Kate attempts to create a temporary structure (for Oprah’s visit), the whole thing falls apart.

Uninvolved Parenting Style

What is Uninvolved Parenting

Uninvolved parents are disengaged and neglectful, providing little emotional support, guidance, or attention to their children. They may have minimal involvement in their children’s lives and may be unaware of things such as their children’s activities, friends, likes or dislikes. This parenting style can have detrimental effects on children’s emotional development and overall well-being.

Example of an Uninvolved Parent in Movies

Kate and Peter McCallister, from the beloved Home Alone franchise, embody this type of parenting perfectly.

Although providing their children with a seemingly idyllic suburban home, Kate and Peter are less than interested in offering parental guidance or understanding their children’s emotional needs. They are so preoccupied with the “adult stuff” around them, that they “forget” Kevin not once, not twice, but however many sequels were created in the franchise.

The result of Kate and Peter’s parenting style is anything but good. Kevin might be resilient and self-sufficient (out of necessity). However, he has difficulty interacting with his peers and he is deeply troubled, even at times depressed.

In moments of sadness or loneliness, Kevin turns to imaginary or peculiar characters for help, such as Santa Claus, the mysterious neighbor or the bird-lady in the park (in part 2). This might land him in a whole new set of problems once he hits puberty!

A Few More Parenting Styles to Consider

Helicopter Parenting Style

What is Helicopter Parenting

Helicopter parenting refers to a style of parenting that involves closely and often excessively monitoring and intervening in a child’s life, particularly with regard to their education, extracurricular activities and decision-making.

This type of parenting is characterized by high levels of control and overinvolvement. Helicopter parents take on a dominant role in their child’s daily activities and decision-making processes. They tend to be overly protective and can hinder their child’s ability to develop independence and problem-solving skills.

Example of an Helicopter Parent in Movies

The character of Daniela Paguro in the animated film Luca is a blueprint of helicopter parenting.

Daniela is constantly warning her little boy of the dangers of going above the surface. Controlled by her own fear of the “human monsters”, she monitors all her boy’s daily activities. When Luca disobeys her, she goes as far as arranging for him to be sent all the way to the bottom of the sea. This would ensure his safety from literally anything, including sunlight.

Luca’s intellectual curiosity brings him to escape his family home, despite his timid and anxious demeanor. However, once he is away from the family home, Luca manages his newfound freedom with a whole lot of difficulty.

Slow Parenting Style

What is Slow Parenting

Slow parenting is a parenting style that emphasizes quality over quantity. It involves allowing children the time and space to explore and learn at their own pace, rather than over-scheduling their days with activities and obligations. This approach encourages parents to prioritize meaningful connections with their children, fostering a supportive and nurturing environment for their emotional and cognitive development. Slow parenting supports a more relaxed and mindful approach to raising children. The focus is on the present moment and cultivating a strong parent-child bond.

Example of a Slow Parent in Movies

The character of Robert Quimby (the Dad) in Ramona and Beezus is a great model of slow parenting.

An artist himself, he encourages Ramona to dive straight into her imagination and discover the world from her very distinct perspective.

This parenting style allows Robert to have an excellent relationship with his daughter Ramona. The downside is that Ramona doesn’t always know how to regulate the imaginary from reality. This causes her issues at school with her peers and her teachers.

The Pros and Cons of Parenting Styles

As you can see from the descriptions above, there is no parenting style that comes without its setbacks (although, as mentioned above, experts agree that authoritative parenting produces the best outcomes).

However, by understanding each parenting style and the impact it may have on your children, you can determine whether it would be a good idea to perhaps borrow portions of other parenting styles. This could help you create more balance and the best possible outcome for your kids.

Discovering Your Parenting Style

Now that you have an idea about some of the popular parenting styles out there, you are probably wondering where you fit in. So, are you ready to find out what’s your movie parent double?

Parent style quiz free
  • How do I communicate with my kids?
  • How do I express affection toward my kids?
  • How do I handle discipline and set boundaries for my children?
  • How do I expect my kids to behave?
  • What achievements do I expect from my kids?
  • What role do independence and autonomy play in my parenting approach?

By reflecting on these questions, you can gain insight into your parenting style and its potential impact on your children’s development.

For example, if you tend to practice positive communication with your child, but also tend to set distinctive boundaries and have high expectations of your children, you may fall under the Authoritative style of parenting.

During your reflection, try to consider your own upbringing and cultural / socioeconomic background. What kind of parenting style did your parents fall under? Did that parenting style work for you? If not, why didn’t it work for you and how can you avoid mimicking your parents’ behavioral tendencies with your own children?

Taking your upbringing into consideration is an important part of this reflection. Oftentimes, parents will realize that they tend to adopt a style of parenting simply because it was part of their upbringing. More on this here.

Embracing Your Parenting Style

Once you have identified your parenting style, it’s important to recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting. Each style has its strengths and weaknesses, and what works for one family may not work for another. Embracing your parenting style means acknowledging your strengths and areas for growth while being open to adapting and learning from your experiences.

That being said, remember that too little or too much of something is usually a bad idea.

Striking a Balance to Your Parenting Approach Is Key

Regardless of your parenting style, finding a balance between warmth and structure is key to fostering healthy child development. Children thrive in environments where they feel loved and supported while also being guided and provided with clear expectations. Striking this balance can help create a nurturing and secure family dynamic.

As children grow and develop, it’s important to remain flexible in your approach to parenting. Adapting to your children’s changing needs and personalities can help strengthen your bond and create a harmonious family environment. Embracing growth as a parent means being open to new strategies and adjusting your style to best support your children’s well-being.

What Happens if Parents Have Different Parenting Styles?

In all the articles I’ve read on the subject, I found that having a different parenting style from your spouse is not a problem. As a matter of fact, some would even argue that it allows children an opportunity to adapt to different approaches.

Every couple, despite their parenting style, will eventually disagree on how to handle an issue with the children. However, it’s how you handle the conflict that matters.

As a general rule, even in disagreement, presenting a united front to your children is always better (you can communicate your differences in private). As in every other argument you may have with your spouse, it’s important to remain respectful and supportive in order to understand the other’s opinion. Reaching a compromise is usually key.

Parenting Tips

Discovering and embracing your parenting style is a journey that involves self-awareness, flexibility, and a deep understanding of your children’s needs. By recognizing the unique qualities of your style and its potential impact, you can create a loving and supportive environment where your children can thrive and develop into confident and resilient individuals.

How to make a cleaning routine

If you’ve landed on this page, it’s probably because you are looking to upgrade your cleaning routine. Or, maybe because you feel the current state of your home leaves a great deal to be desired. Don’t worry, you are not alone.

According to a survey conducted by OnePoll for affresh® , 65% of Americans admit their cleaning skills could be improved. Another study found that 54% of people find cleaning more stressful and time-consuming than any other task on their workload. Also, according to the IFS, 49% of married couples of school-aged children admit that the subject of chores and responsibilities is the #1 reason why they argue.

So, if you’re struggling in the home sanitization department, know that about 1 in 2 people feel the same.

I’ve had my share of struggles before I was able to create an effective cleaning routine. It took years before I came to understand the most important rule about cleaning a family home (more on this later).

Keep reading to learn more about my journey to how I created a cleaning routine that actually works or skip and go straight to the guide.

My husband R and I were married for almost 9 years before we had kids. During those early years of our marriage, my definition of housekeeping was what I liked to call “big cleaning days”.

Big cleaning days (usually taking place on a Saturday) basically consisted of me completely overhauling our 2-bedroom apartment, scrubbing and washing everything and anything in sight, including ceilings, fixtures, walls, baseboards, and windows.

Closets and kitchen cabinets were decluttered and rearranged where needed; big appliances were moved in order to ensure spotlessness behind them, and floors were vacuumed and mopped. In other words, I spring-cleaned our apartment about every 6 to 8 weeks… Ugh! The energy I had in my pre-kids era! A tear is almost forming at the corner of my eye…

On those “big cleaning days”, my frantic war against dirt and dust ended sometime in the late afternoon, when I finally sat down in my living room sipping on espresso and admiring my good work: a spotless apartment.

My housekeeping routine went on like that for years. I did the bare minimum on most weeks, then embarked on cleaning overdrive on a random Saturday to make up for lost time. It wasn’t perfect, but our place was actually quite clean most of the time and housekeeping did not feel like an issue at all.

How to Keep Your Home Clean After Having a Baby

How to keep your home clean and organized

After E was born, keeping our home clean became more of a challenge. My big cleaning days became more and more sporadic. By the time our second child (B) was around, we had moved into a 3-floor townhouse and, big cleaning days were almost nonexistent.

The thing is that I longed for my big cleaning days. Not so much the cleaning part (although our 3-floor mess could have used a scrubbing), but it was that empowering feeling that I missed: that satisfaction of seeing the job through and experiencing the result of my labor (which in this case was having a clean home for a few hours).

The End of Big Cleaning Days

Now, anyone who’s been a parent of little ones knows that, with babies and toddlers, the job is never done. There’s always a new mess, something you started but didn’t quite get to finish, and, for the stay at home mom that I was at the time, the sensation of not fully completing any task (ever!) drove me crazy.

I’m kind of ashamed to say that I often daydreamed of my next big cleaning day. However, when a scheduled big cleaning day actually came around and R took the kids on an activity for most of the day, I found myself sitting on the couch sipping coffee, before I even started the job!

The truth is that I felt too tired to move the fridge and stove or dust the ceiling fan. To be honest, I kind of enjoyed, well, doing nothing for once! I’d usually just end up tidying up the place and swallow up the feeling of complete failure before the family came back home.

In other words, “big cleaning days” turned into “me doing nothing days”, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing, they just didn’t have the same self-fulfilling effect. Plus, our home remained in a dire need of a deep clean.

I obtusely insisted on maintaining this ridiculous housekeeping tradition until we had our third child (O), and we decided to move into our current home, which more than doubled the square footage of our previous townhouse.

I remember that, when we first moved, I was overwhelmed. There was no way I could possibly overhaul the entire place in one Saturday morning. No. It couldn’t be done. If appropriate sanitization was going to be maintained, it needed to be done in smaller, more manageable tasks.

Figuring Out How to Manage a Cleaning Routine

After mothering 3 children and over 15 years of living out of my parents’ place, I had finally understood the key to keeping a home clean: clean as you go.

It’s quite a simple concept, but one that many people (myself included) fail to follow. If your hamper is overflowing, you’re included too, Mama!

It’s just that, between the drop-offs and pickups, work schedules, kids activities and all our daily must-dos, the dust bunnies lurking behind the hutch quickly tend to plunge to number 1372 on our priority list.

Nevertheless, those bunnies won’t clean themselves, and they’ll continue to pile up behind our furniture (and our minds) no matter how much we choose to ignore them.

So, to solve my “big cleaning” issue once and for all, I came up with a routine that has actually been working for our family—at least on most days.

Why Is It Important to Have a Clean Home?

house cleaning schedule

Housework is that thing that everyone wants to avoid, yet desperately wants to have down pat. But why is it so important for us to have a clean home? And why does it feel so darn stressful when rooms get messy?

No matter how much we all want to resist and convince ourselves that it’s okay to have a messy (or perhaps even dirty) house just because we have young kids, the hard truth is that science has proved us wrong. Here’s why.

1 – A Messy, Disorganized Home Can Affect Your Mental Health

A study completed in 2009, found that time spent at home feels either restorative or stressful. The study found that people living in cluttered environments actually developed higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

2 – Visual Mess Puts Your Brain Into Overdrive

Scientists at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute have proven that “Multiple stimuli present in the visual field at the same time compete for neural representation by mutually suppressing their evoked activity throughout visual cortex, providing a neural correlate for the limited processing capacity of the visual system.”

Translation: The region of the brain that processes visual information becomes overwhelmed when there is too much going on around us.

This means that even if you’re not consciously looking at the dishes on the counter, the mess on the table, the winter coat tossed on the armchair and the toys scattered all around on the floor, your brain still detects all these items at once and goes on a mini system overload.

This results in a decrease of working memory, a decrease in productivity and an increased feeling of fatigue. Over time, this can also cause your anxiety levels to skyrocket because your brain is just too mentally tired.

3 – Cleaning Your Home Regularly Can Help You Stay Healthy

Frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, handrails, toilets, faucet handles, and tables need to be regularly cleaned and disinfected in order to help prevent the spread of germs and, therefore, of illness. Here are the CDC recommendations on how to clean and disinfect your home.

4 – Regular House Cleaning Can Reduce Allergy Triggers

Vacuuming, dusting and cleaning different parts of your home helps reduce the presence of dust, allergens, pollen and mold in your home.

How to Keep Your House Clean

How to keep your house clean and organized

As mentioned above, for years I stubbornly tried to hang on to my old ways of looking at housework, but I finally came to the conclusion that I was no longer going to ignore bigger cleaning jobs and assume I could magically get them all done in a few hours on a Saturday morning. I finally realized that the key to maintaining a busy family home was to clean every day, not just tidy up, clean—every day!

Don’t cry Mama, I got you.

I figured out how to create a cleaning routine that is not just about removing the mess. It gets down to the nitty gritty of how to keep a home clean without pressure AND without taking too much time out of our already way too busy schedule.

Easy enough? Yes! Actually, it is!

Here’s how:

5-Step Guide to Having a Spotless Home

How to clean effectively

STEP 1: Do a Walkthrough of Your Home & Make a List of Manageable Cleaning Tasks

Walk through your home, observing every single room as if you were a Public Health Inspector.

When you stop in a room, ask yourself what works in the room, what doesn’t. If the room is over-cluttered, make a plan to declutter it (set a date and enter it in your calendar).

Then, make a list of the cleaning tasks you wish you could accomplish for each of the rooms in your house. Think spic and span and be specific. Break down the tasks as much as possible. For example, instead of just writing “dusting”, separate the task into “dust furniture”, “dust moldings”, “dust lamp shades and fixtures”, etc.

STEP 2: Review Your List of Tasks & Group them Together

Once you’ve completed your task list for each of the rooms in your home, see if you can group some of the tasks together. For example, you may have “dust furniture” for more than one room, like the living room, the bedrooms and the office. Reduce your list by grouping the same tasks together.

If you live in a multi-level home and prefer working on one floor at a time, you can also group the tasks by floor-level (e.g., “dust furniture – main floor”,  “dust furniture – 2nd floor” and so on).

STEP 3: Enter Your Cleaning Tasks Into a WSAHM Matrix

Inspired by the Eisenhower Power Matrix and other time management techniques, I came up with the WSAHM Matrix to help me decipher how to prioritize my tasks.

In a nutshell, the WSAHM Matrix is made to help separate each task by merit (Essential, High-Impact and Low-Impact) and the time it takes to complete the task (less than 30 minutes, about an hour, and over an hour).

How to prioritize your cleaning chores

How to Create Your Own WSAHM Matrix

Start by separating each task by merit (Essential, High-Impact and Low-Impact).

An Essential task is a task that is absolutely necessary to accomplish daily in order for the household to function appropriately and in a calm, peaceful manner on any given day. Washing dishes is a good example of this. No household can run smoothly and calmly with a kitchen sink full of dirty dishes.

A High-impact task is a task that is not necessary for the basic functioning of the household, however, completing it will have a strong positive impact on either the daily functioning or the overall calmness of the household. The perfect example of this type of task is making the bed. Not getting around to making your bed in the morning will not stop you from accomplishing the daily tasks you need to do (such as cooking, laundering clothes, etc.). However, it has been proven that a tidy bed can actually have a positive impact on your well-being.

A Low-impact task is a chore that will have a minimal effect on the daily functioning of the household, even if completed. For example, the dust behind your fridge will not prevent you from accomplishing your necessary daily tasks.

Note, however, that tasks can move from one merit frame to the next. A low-impact task can move to high-impact or even become essential if it is neglected long enough. For example, decluttering the refrigerator may be a low-impact task until the fridge gets so messy that it becomes frustrating for you to put away your groceries or reach what you need to cook dinner. Another example can be how getting your winter accessories out of the storage bin might be a low-impact task in September, but it can quickly become an essential task if the weather unexpectedly turns colder.

Consider the Time It Will Take You to Finish Each Task

Once all your tasks are divided by merit, determine how long it should take you on average to complete each task. Categorize them as follows:

  • Quick (less than 30 minutes)
  • Time-notable (about an hour)
  • Time-consuming (more than an hour)

Ideally, most tasks should fall under the “quick” or “time-notable” categories.

If you find yourself with several tasks in the “time-consuming” category, try to break them up into smaller tasks. For example, “Do the dishes” can be broken down into “empty the dishwasher”, “load the dishwasher”, “wipe the counters”, “clear the table”, etc.

Why Break Down Big Tasks Into Smaller Tasks?

There are two main reasons why it’s important to divide your tasks into smaller, less time consuming tasks:

  1. As a busy parent, you seldomly have a full hour to spare on a cleaning task, such as cleaning your whole kitchen. However, you might have 5 minutes to empty the dishwasher in between calls, 10 minutes to load the dishwasher after a meal, etc. In the end, all of it gets done; it just gets done in batches.
  2. Smaller tasks can easily be delegated to other members of the family. Now that my kids are older (10, 9 and 5), I rarely empty the dishwasher or clear the table anymore. These chores have been passed on to them.

STEP 4: Create Your Daily, Weekly, Monthly and Seasonal Cleaning Routine

Now that you know which tasks are essential to your family’s daily needs, which have a high positive impact on your day-to-day, and which are less important to the overall functioning of your household; AND you have allocated an average time frame to each of your tasks, you can determine how you will separate your tasks into daily, weekly, monthly and even seasonal cleaning routines.

As a general rule of thumb, your daily cleaning routine should include:

  • all essential tasks
  • as many quick high-impact tasks as possible
  • and, if time permits, one or two low-impact tasks

Your weekly cleaning routine should include time-notable high-impact tasks and your monthly cleaning routine should mostly be time-notable low-impact tasks.

Save the time-consuming, low-impact tasks for your seasonal cleaning routine. Examples of this can be cleaning and organizing the garage or degreasing the stove hood.

Okay, I’ll admit it all sounds pretty confusing. To make things a little clearer I’m sharing my own lists below.

Notice how I’ve included no more than 10 tasks in each list.

Example of a Daily Cleaning Routine

List of Daily household Chores

Notice how #10 is all about completing tasks from my weekly and monthly cleaning routines. This ensures that I don’t have to spend my Saturdays cleaning. My weekly, deep-cleaning tasks are completed as I move along the week.

I also added the average time I allocate to each of these tasks. However, please keep in mind that some of these chores are shared amongst me and the other members of my family (my husband and daughters). This is why I combined emptying and loading the dishwasher as 1 task. My girls are actually in charge of emptying the dishwasher.

Here’s how this routine translates to a perfect day in our household. Learn more about a Working Stay at Home Mom schedule.

Example of a Weekly Cleaning Routine

List of Weekly Household chores

Notice how #10 is all about completing a monthly task (which is still included in the time frame of my daily routine) so I’m still not adding any extra work for myself.

I also assigned my tasks to specific days. Notice how I did not assign weekly tasks to my daily schedule for Sundays and Mondays. This allows me to take a break on Sundays and leaves me Mondays to catch up on any weekly chores I might not have had time to complete in the previous week.

Here’s how this all would translate in a perfect week in our household.

List of Weekly Household Chores

Notice how most tasks repeat themselves daily (these are my essential tasks), except for Sunday when I am okay with purposely slacking off and doing the bare minimum.

The tasks entered in blue are the tasks listed in my weekly cleaning routine.

The tasks entered in pink are monthly tasks and, finally, the tasks entered in purple are seasonal tasks (these lists are below).

I also made sure to include a “Catch up” section where I listed a task I didn’t get to last month. The “Catch up” and “This Month” sections include chores that have no allotted time in my daily schedule. They are low-impact tasks, so I will have to get to them when I can, hopefully within the current month.

Example of a Monthly Cleaning Routine

I have included how I separate these tasks within my schedule.

4 tasks have their own spot in my weekly to-do list (#10 in the weekly cleaning routine). 2 of the tasks require that I allocate extra time in  my monthly schedule to complete them, and 3 of the tasks are what I like to call “ongoing”. This means that I complete them as I go along throughout the month. I might, for example, dust the baseboards while I mop the floor, or dust the light fixture in the dining room while I’m dusting the hard surfaces of the room.

My ongoing way of cleaning the refrigerator allows me to break this annoyingly lengthy task down into several micro tasks. Every time I come back from the grocery store, I clean out one section of the fridge before putting my groceries away. It’s true, I end up cleaning a part of my fridge every week, but it’s a five-minute job that will not impact my day’s schedule and the clutter in my fridge never piles up.

Example of a Seasonal Cleaning Routine

None of the tasks listed in my seasonal cleaning routine are included in my daily schedule. Extra time therefore needs to be allocated to my regular schedule in order to complete these tasks. I did, however, spread them by month. This makes it easier to find an hour or two somewhere in the month to complete the task.

STEP 5: Test Drive Your Cleaning Routines and Make Changes As Needed

Once you’ve come up with all your lists, try them out!

There will definitely be an adjustment period, especially if you’re not familiar with breaking down tasks. However, over the course of a few weeks, this way of doing housework should begin to feel more natural.

Remember that not all routines are created equal!

I have shared how I like to separate my tasks and the merit that I give to each specific chore, according to the necessities of my family. However, yours might look a little or even completely different, and that’s okay!

For example, I’m sure that parents of toddlers probably categorize picking up toys or tidying up the playroom as an essential daily task. Whereas I didn’t even include this task in my list. This is because my kids are now old enough to pick up their own toys and I clean the playroom in the same way I would any other room in the house. Find out more about how I organized my kids’ playroom.

A Few More Cleaning Tips to Keep in Mind

This process should feel rewarding!

If you are feeling stressed by your routine, reassess it. Maybe you are listing too many chores in one day, or maybe you have not allocated enough time to specific tasks? Remember that routines can always be revised according to the ever-changing needs of a busy family.

Remember to Be Kind to Yourself

The purpose of doing all this is not to become obsessed with checkmarking your days. It’s just a guideline to help you finally take control of your housework. Do what you can. If you only end up completing 50% of the tasks listed in your daily routine, great! At least those tasks are done!

Believe me, there are many days when I lag behind and end up sipping on a coffee instead of dusting the ceiling fan. The difference is that now I don’t feel guilty about it anymore. I just smile and tell myself “Oh well, I’ll just have to catch up on it tomorrow😉

work from home routine

Getting a working stay at home mom schedule down pat is no easy feat.

Like many other modern-day women, I want to be at home with my kids, but I also need to work—for financial reasons and because it’s sometimes nice to stop singing “twinkle, twinkle little star” for a little while.

So… Well, I do both!

I am a stay at home mom who also works from home, hence the self-proclaimed “Working Stay at Home Mom” or “WSAHM”, and I’ve been living the WSAHM lifestyle since 2016.

I do not consider myself a “work from home mom” because I don’t have a designated work schedule. Instead, I work around my kids’ schedules.

How do I do it?

It takes a lot of coffee, prayers, and carefully thought-out plans that I don’t end-up following!

It’s an animated, interesting household, but we wouldn’t want it any other way.

Living the WSAHM Lifestyle

Living a WSAHM lifestyle is not for the faint of heart. It can sometimes get chaotic and little overwhelming.

However, over the years, I somehow found balance in the chaos of runny noses, sticky fingers and professional deadlines (here’s more on my way too personal account of how I became a WSAHM

Now that my kids are getting a little older, and that I have had several years of practicing this type of lifestyle with kids of different ages (including a newborn at some point!), I feel that I have a typical WSAHM schedule down pat.

So, here’s a typical weekday in my life!

Actually, I’m offering you 2 typical weekdays in our household. The first is when the kids are in school. The second is when the kids are home either on holiday or for summer vacation.

My hope is that, by sharing a glimpse of our perfectly imperfect lives, I might help other parents find their way through the wonderful chaos of raising a family.

Typical Working Stay at Home Mom Schedule (School Days)

remote work routines

6:30am – 7:30am Morning Routine

My husband R is in charge of making lunches while I tidy up and help the kids (mostly my youngest) get ready for school. On a good day, the dishwasher is also emptied right away in the morning, but that rarely happens. In the morning I also wipe down the bathroom counters once everyone is dressed. That’s usually all we get to do before rushing out the door to walk the girls to school.

8:00am – 8:30am Quick Whole-House Walkthrough

R and I quickly pick up whatever exploding mess was left over from the morning routine. Then one of us clears the morning dishes and makes coffee, while the other puts on a load of laundry. This is also when I take out the kitchen trash if it wasn’t done the night before. By this time, I also make sure I at least have a vague idea of what I’m going to make for dinner so I can take whatever I need out of the freezer to thaw. That’s usually all I get to do before R and I tend to our professional responsibilities.

CONFESSION: Some mornings R and I ditch this whole routine and just sit for half an hour and have coffee instead ❤

8:30am – 11:30am Professional Work Time

If my work schedule permits it, I will sometimes try to take 15 to 30 minutes out of this time block to complete a household chore.

CONFESSION: I take an hour off work on Mondays and Wednesdays to go to my Pilates class.

11:30am – 12:30pm Lunch

Lunch is usually leftovers in our household. During my “lunch hour” I also make sure to complete the following tasks:

  • Throw the load of laundry in the dryer
  • Start prepping dinner if I plan to make something a little more elaborate
  • Complete another cleaning task

12:30pm – 2:30pm Professional Work Time

If my work schedule permits it, I will sometimes take this time to run errands.

2:30pm – 4:30pm After School Madness

This is by far the busiest time in my day; with pickups, snacks, after-school activities, homework and everything else in between. I don’t know exactly what happens during this time block, I just know that it’s chaotic and usually mess inducing. No point in even attempting a cleaning task or answer an email during this time—it’s best to just accept the chaos and go with it.

4:30pm – 5:30pm – Dinner Prep

This time block usually starts with me nagging at the kids to pick up their homework off the kitchen table or reminding them not to be too loud since their dad is still working and most likely on a business call. A lot happens during this time block: the kids have their free time (think new messes in various rooms of the house), R is busy working, and I’m multitasking.

CONFESSION: This is a more stressful time for me because I feel I’m being pulled in a thousand directions. This includes:

  • Negotiating screen time with my oldest E
  • My little one O wants to play restaurant or bakery shop
  • B is usually doing something she’s not supposed to be doing
  • I have to get dinner done
  • And I have a load of laundry to fold at the back of my mind

Some days, everything works out great! The girls help me make dinner (I even get started on doing the dishes) and we are all jollier than the characters from a Hallmark movie.

Some other days, however, things don’t go quite as planned. By the time R’s done work, he trips over a princess castle left right outside his office door, dinner’s not ready, the laundry pile’s been left on our bed and I’m tending to a finger paint spill.

5:30pm – 6:30pm Dinner Time

This is usually when we sit together and have dinner. By now the stress of the hour before has cooled down.

6:30pm – 7:00pm Clean Up Time

This is when we all clean up together. The girls empty the dishwasher and clear the table. I do the rest of the kitchen (load the dishwasher, wipe the counter and sink) while R tidies up high traffic rooms. By around 7pm, I’m vacuuming the high-traffic areas or finishing up whatever cleaning task I didn’t get to finish.

7:00pm – 8:00pm Family Time

We are either all together during this time or we might separate, depending on the evenings.

8:00pm – 8:30pm Bedtime Routine

This used to be quite an eventful time when the kids were younger, but they are pretty independent by now. So except for negotiating with O that it’s time to put on her pajamas, the rest is not too bad.

8:30pm – 8:45pm Family Prayers and Good Nights

We like to pray as a family every night. After this, we say our good nights. It often takes many good nights before we get our point across and they finally settle down.

9:00pm – 10:30pm  Adult time

This is when R and I shut things down.

CONFESSION: I sometimes have to catch up on work during this time, if I have a few too many professional projects to tend to. However, this rarely happens.

We usually try to get to bed by 10:30, that’s unless we find the forgotten pile of laundry to fold on our bed!

Typical Working Stay at Home Mom Schedule (When the Kids Are Home)

Working Mom Routines

6:30am – 8:30am Professional Work Time

If you are working around your kids’ schedule, work flexibility is a must. Yes, starting your workday at 6:30am might feel like a pain, but it’s a good way to avoid having to work too late in the evening.

During this time, my husband R tends to the kids with their morning routine.

CONFESSION: Some days my husband R has to work at the office and is commuting during this timeslot. When this happens, I usually have to cut this 2-hour work period out of my schedule. This often means more evening work for me 🙁

8:30am – 9am Quick Whole-House Walkthrough

I quickly pick up whatever exploding mess was left over from the morning routine, while R logs into work for the day. I also put on a load of laundry and make sure I figure out what to make for dinner so I can take whatever I need out of the freezer to thaw.

9am – 11:30am Time With Kids

This can be one or several activities either at home or outside.

If we stay home, I will sometimes try to take 15 to 30 minutes out of this time block to complete a household chore.

NOTE: If your kids are homeschooled, this is a great time to do schoolwork.

CONFESSION: When the kids are home, I do not go to my Pilates class which usually takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays.

11:30am – 12:30pm Lunch

During our “lunch hour” I also make sure to complete the following tasks:

  • Throw the load of laundry in the dryer
  • Start prepping dinner if I plan to make something a little more elaborate
  • Put the lunch dishes in the dishwasher

12:30pm – 1:30pm Professional Work Time / Quiet Time For the Kids

Depending on their age group, this time can either be nap time or simply quiet time for the kids.

When they are home on a weekday, my kids have about an hour to watch TV or read after lunch. When they were younger, they would sometimes take a nap, although they were never quite big on it.

For Mama, this is your chance to focus! Although it’s just an hour, it is an important hour for your business. It gives you a chance to check your emails, make a business call or attend a virtual meeting. Especially if you are dealing with clients, you need to have a day time slot to tend to your business affairs. Go get’em girl!

NOTE: If this time doesn’t work with your business clients, shift it to another time during the day that works for you and your family. Remember that you make your own working stay at home mom schedule. So try it out and change it if needed.

CONFESSION: If I have no emails or business to tend to, I still take this time to myself to do whatever.

1:30pm – 4:30pm Time With Kids

Again, this can be one or several activities either at home or outside.

If we stay home, I will try to take time out of this block to complete a few household chores (involving the kids when I can).

I will also run errands during this time when I need to, tagging the kids along with me of course.

NOTE: If your kids are homeschooled, this is also a great time to do schoolwork.

4:30pm – 5:30pm – Dinner Prep

On days when the kids are home, this time is a lot less hectic. I think it’s because they have been with me all day and are not fighting for my attention. During this time, they will either prep dinner with me or have free time on their own. Especially if we did a lot during the day, they will usually select something quiet, like drawing, reading or playing with dolls.

5:30pm – 6:30pm Dinner Time

This is when we sit together and have dinner. By this time, R has completed his workday and is ready to take over things.

6:30pm – 8:30pm  Professional Work Time

I will admit that this is a difficult time to get back to work. By now, you are tired from running around little ones all day and all you want to do is rest. Remember, you started your workday at 6:30am. Twelve hours later, you are ready to call it quits.

If you are too tired and your schedule permits it, take the night off. You earned it! If you can’t, just tell yourself that whatever you get done now, you won’t have to get done later.

CONFESSION: This is the time when I am the least productive, so I schedule tasks that don’t require a lot of brain power.

Also, when the kids are off during the summer, I try not to schedule myself evening work every single night. I feel that I no longer have the stamina for such long days anymore. In an ideal world, I take Saturdays and Sundays off from professional work. However, if I’m too tired for the evening shifts, I prefer putting in a few hours of work on Saturday mornings rather than burning myself out.

8:30pm – 8:45pm Family Prayers and Good Nights

By now, R and the kids have completed all their usual nighttime routine (dishes, clean up, family time) and the kids are ready for bed.

I will try to take 15 minutes with my kids, even if I’m not quite done with my work.

9:00pm – 10:30pm  Adult time

This is when R and I shut things down.

CONFESSION: I sometimes have to catch up on work during this time, if I have a few too many professional projects to tend to or if I slacked off between the hours of 6:30pm to 8:30pm. However, I try not to make this a regular occurrence.

We usually try to get to bed by 10:30, unless we’ve both fallen asleep on the couch before then!

A Few More Working Mom Tips to Remember

As mentioned previously, the schedules listed above are “ideal”, but “ideal” seldomly happens. Life is full of surprises and challenges. So, even if you create yourself the perfect schedule, please remember the following:

1- Be Flexible

Working stay at home moms need to be ready to change their schedule on the flip of a dime. A tummy ache, a snowstorm, a sudden business emergency or a change of schedule for your spouse are all examples of things that can make you have to play Tetris with your agenda.

Remember that as a WSAHM, your family and business agendas are kind of intertwined and either one can spill into the other. Your success will be in juggling both realities as best as you can.

2- Be Kind to Yourself

Remember that, as a working stay at home mom, you are attempting to do the impossible: be a stay at home mom and a working professional all at the same time.

Managing both realities well takes practice. So, if things go completely wrong one day, don’t be harsh on yourself. Just make the best of it and move on.

3- Don’t Burn Yourself Out

Managing a working stay at home mom schedule can be difficult, especially if you have younger children.

If you feel overwhelmed, frustrated or simply too tired, you may need to reassess things. Are you working too many hours? Are you working at times that do not correspond with your Circadian rhythm? Do you need more help? Be honest with yourself and take into account your needs as well as the needs of the other members of the family.

4- Take Some “Me Time”

The life of a WSAHM requires you to move from one commitment to the next. The lines between your professional, personal and family life often becoming blurred. It’s so easy to find yourself running around frantically, going from one thing to the next until the wee hours of the morning (trust me I fell into this trap quite often in my early days as a WSAHM). This is why it’s crucial that you take a little time to yourself.

If you notice in my examples above, I try to go to Pilates class twice a week, when my working mom schedule permits. I also avoid having to do any professional work on the weekend, except for an occasional couple of hours on Saturday morning when I’m really stuck. The rest of the time, I don’t even check my emails on Saturdays and Sundays.

Taking Micro Breaks

What I also didn’t mention in my examples above, is that I try to take micro breaks throughout the day. It’s hard for any mom to take time to herself during the day, especially when the kids are young. This is why, just like I break up my cleaning chores into smaller tasks that take less time (check out my Ultimate Cleaning Guide to understand what I mean), I take micro breaks for myself to unwind from all the stressors of the day.

Micro “me time” breaks don’t have to get complicated. They can be doing things like taking 5 minutes to quietly sip a steaming cup of tea, stepping outside for a minute to soak in a bit of sunshine, retrieving to a quiet room to say a few prayers or meditate—whatever allows you to take a step back!

Remember, that the whole point of adopting a WSAHM lifestyle is to find balance in your life. So be more mindful of how you are spending your days and take the time to enjoy your life and what you are accomplishing.

I had big dreams for my thanksgiving table setting this year.

I am a little embarrassed to admit it, but I’ve been mulling over all the details of my thanksgiving table setting since August. From the color palettes and potential centerpieces to the choice of dinnerware and whatnots, I have been giving my Thanksgiving table way too much thought!

But alas, in the end, I couldn’t do any of it! I unfortunately sprained my ankle pretty badly and I am now stuck with crutches for a few weeks. Maybe the Good Lord wanted to give me a lesson on giving silly things too much importance or maybe it’s just a bit of bad luck; I’ll never know, I guess. What I do know, however, is that I had to shrink up my ideas of grandeur and present you with a toned down version of what I was going to create.

Despite my slight disappointment of not getting to show off my meticulously planned tablescape, I am extremely happy with the result of this simple, yet elegant Thanksgiving table setting.

My sprained ankle has been a lesson on humility and remembering to focus on what is truly important: being grateful to spend Thanksgiving with the people that I love and am thankful for, despite what the decor looks like!
In the end, I am kinda glad I kept things simple this year, plus, well, there’s always next year 😉

Table Setting Basics

Because of my injury, I wasn’t able to purchase the majority of the last minute stuff I needed, like fresh flowers and greenery, so I had to work with what I had.

Simple thanksgiving table setting ideas

About a month ago, I found these beautiful charger plates on sale at Micheal’s, a jute table runner at my local dollar shop and plaid napkins at the grocery store.

All simple stuff that don’t necessarily go together, but they are the foundation of my table setting.

As a matter of fact, I always try to buy pieces that can be used for different occasions. This is what I like about the Micheal’s charger plates I found. They don’t necessarily say “Thanksgiving” or even “autumn”, but pair them with a few seasonal elements, and voilà! They become the perfect base to a Thanksgiving tablescape!

Setting the Table

Because of my injury, we are keeping things casual this year, so I went with my classic off-white dinnerware and blown glass glassware.

Dinnerware Thanksgiving

Again, I love these pieces because they are so versatile. The off-white dinnerware has a thin gold rim which makes it easy to elevate it from a casual family gathering to a formal dinner event with just a few table accessories.

These plates and glasses are my go-to accessories for most of my table settings. They are like that little black dress that easily transitions from casual wear to evening wear with just a change of shoes.

Once I had all elements figured-out, it was time to get to work.

Table Setting Steps

I started by placing the jute table runner at the center of the table, with charger plates on each side of it. Then, I moved on to dinnerware and glassware.

Now, just like this, the table looked quite pretty, and I think that most people stop there with their table setting. However, that is the equivalent to wearing a beautiful outfit with no jewelry or any kind of accessories: it looks a little bland.

Tablescaping is all about adding layer upon layer to create a beautiful dining experience.

So I looked around the house and decided to add the lantern that usually sits on my mantle and white large ceramic vases that would create balance on either side of the lantern.

Fall table centerpiece

Then, it was time to add some color.

I stuck with the autumn theme and added a beautiful leaf garland and various pumpkins to the mix.

autumn decor

The end result was a beautiful fall inspired Thanksgiving table setting that was very easy to put together, even with crutches!

I hope this has inspired you to add a little something extra to your next Holiday table setting.

Happy Thanksgiving and God bless,

I live in a city where most moms have to work full time. Children go to daycare from a young age and, once they reach school age, they spend their summers at day camps.

The children are tired and the parents are exasperatedly stuck in a vicious cycle of infinite love tangled with the monstrous desire to run away.

When my husband and I had our first (E), we decided to make every sacrifice possible for me to stay at home full time.

I would love to be able to tell you that being a stay at home mom was a bliss, but it wasn’t.

Being a Stay at Home Mom Just Wasn’t for Me

Actually, being a SAHM was pretty terrible for me.

Where I live, the life of a stay-at-home mom is one of feeling isolated, having serious financial headaches and, sadly, of often being stigmatized as lazy, old-fashioned and even unsophisticated.

Nevertheless, we struggled, but made it last for a few years. But when our second (B) was about eighteen months old, I returned to work full time, mostly because of financial reasons.

Despite a re-established financial independence and a fulfilling job, that did not feel right for us either.

When the girls got sick, I was incapable of taking them to daycare stuffed with acetaminophen, even though the thought of having to call in sick again made my palms sweat.

And on dark winter mornings, I would glance at their little faces still numb with sleep, and felt an overwhelming sense of regret and guilt. All I could think about was that they wouldn’t get their lazy summers or the chance to grow up with Mom and discover the world at their own pace. No! Being a full-time working mother was not for me either.

I was constantly tormented by what to do. My heart refused to continue working full time, but my mind cringed at the thought of being broke and going back to singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star twenty times a day.

How do I start working after being a stay at home mom?

Finding Work-Life Balance, or Better Yet, Just Life Balance

Fortunately, our little family was in God’s favor and I was able to find a solution to this daily torment. I quit my full-time corporate position and started offering part-time virtual data entry services; a gig that eventually led me to becoming a freelance content writer / copywriter, a profession that was in line with my passion for writing, my intellectual curiosity and my bachelor’s in English Literature.

The fact that my job was project-based was revolutionary for me. I could suddenly work around my kids’ schedule! I still sent them to daycare, but on a half-time schedule, and with an arrangement to keep them home during the summer. Plus, I never had to worry about my kids waking up with the sniffles. If they were sick, they stayed home with me and I would work in the evening when my husband came home. I had finally found my niche!

Now, with several years’ experience as a self-proclaimed working stay at home mom, I feel that it’s time to pay it forward and help other parents find their balance in the wonderful chaos that is raising a family.

Adopting a WSAHM way of life is not for the faint of heart, but it is a blessing that saved my family life.

Toys…

Any parent of young children cringes a little bit when they hear the word toys

It’s not that we dislike toys. It’s just that, once you have kids, Toys.Are.Everywhere.

In the bath, in the kitchen, in the living room of course, in closets and cupboards and on the fridge, sometimes in the fridge!

As your baby grows, your environment is suddenly taken over by a multitude of colorful little objects you’d love to get rid of, but really can’t live without.

If you’re a little design obsessed like I am, toys kinda become a nightmare; and I’m not just talking about that tiny little one that you step on on your way to bed at midnight! In what seems like an instant, toys take the center stage, while your cherished vases and decorative objects are put away because you need to babyproof your space. At least, that’s what happened in our home, well our previous home, actually.

Our open-concept first floor, did not have much space for storage. So when E and B were toddlers, our living room looked more like a messy playroom than, well, the open-concept trendy space it was supposed to be.

I became obsessed with finding a way to “hide” the toys. I tried all the classic storage solutions: from baskets and toy chests, to a large cabinet with doors.

Despite my endeavors, in the end, the toys always ended up stacked in piles, along the walls of the room. Because nothing had its designated space, playtime meant a devastating explosion of toys all over our living space.

By the time O was born, the added baby gear ravaged any hope of having even the slightest possibility of any kind of interior decorating in the home. We were bursting at the seams, and I secretly blamed the toys.

Fast forward a few years, and we finally moved into a larger one-floor home. When we were moving in, the girls asked me if they could all share a room. I agreed immediately, of course. I had my eye on the bedroom closest to the kitchen. It was my ticket to finally winning a mother’s war against toys.

The room near the kitchen was fairly large and it could  accommodate all my ideas of grandeur about what a playroom could be, and what the rest of our house could achieve: to become virtually toy free!

In no time, I eagerly made my plan for the perfect playroom for my girls.

Playroom Ideas

When it came to designing the girls’ playroom, I had all these ideas, but putting everything together wasn’t so easy.

I wanted to create 3 defined spaces for the playroom that would accommodate the age difference of the girls and their individual interests.

The 3 areas were:

  • – A play area for my toddler, O
  • – An arts and crafts area for the older ones
  • – A reading spot

I also needed to add my linen cabinets in there for lack of a better space.

The room already came with a large closet with integrated shelves, so there was no need to create extra storage.

What I did need to create, was an airy feel despite everything I wanted to fit in the room. Oh, and I also needed to do it on a budget.

So, here’s what I came up with:

Playroom Design

Play room decor

The Outcome: Our Playroom’s Pros and Cons

Playrooms Make for a Tidier Home (PRO)

I bet you are wondering if designing a playroom made all my housekeeping dreams come true and the answer is yes, for the most part!

Although, at first, the girls were excited about having their own space and loved to keep it neat, the honeymoon phase did not last very long.

The devastating explosions of toys are back with a vengeance! However, most of the damage stays in the playroom now, so, I’d say I won the battle against toys.

Having a playroom can make you miss out on some of those special moments (CON)

For as much as it’s nice to keep the mess in one spot, I kind of feel that I sometimes miss out on some of the action.

Although our playroom is right next to the kitchen, I do not have an open view into the playroom. This means I can hear what is going on, but I cannot see what my little ones are up to in there.

I therefore feel like I’m missing out on watching my youngest be in her own little world!

To remedy this, I moved her kitchen set (her favorite) in the kitchen. This way I can watch her be a chef, or lately a baker, while I’m busy working away in the kitchen.

Toys Sometimes Still Spill to the Rest of the House (REALITY)

I’d love to say that the rest of our home is virtually toy free, but that’s just not true. There’s of course, O’s kitchen set in the kitchen and the kids regularly carry their favorites in other living spaces of our home. However, the thought of having a designated space to put it all away is reassuring to me.

Is a Playroom Worth It?

After having a playroom for over two years now, I can safely say that yes, having a playroom was definitely a game changer for our family.

That being said, if you are going to take the playroom route, it’s important to take a few factors into account:

Playroom Dos and Don’ts

DON’T Turn the Playroom Into Your Home’s Dump Site

The playroom should not become that place where useless things get dumped. A playroom should be designed with a purpose in mind that takes into account what type of activities your family is into.

DON’T Make the Playroom a Kids Only Space

The point here is not to isolate your kids to the playroom. Make space for parents to join in the fun and, whenever it can be done, make the playroom as close as the main living space of the home as possible, so that you can be close to the action. You’ll miss out on a lot if you don’t.

DON’T Accumulate Forgotten Toys in Your Playroom

Like every other room in your home, your playroom also needs to be decluttered every once in a while. Keep what your kids are playing with, give away what they are no longer into and store away in a bin those memorable items you just can’t part with yet.

DO Treat Your Playroom as a Part of Your Living Space

To me, a playroom should be inviting and a part of your family’s living space. This means tidying up daily and cleaning it (dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, etc.) as often as you clean other rooms in your home.

DO Expect Your Kids to Be Involved in Cleaning and Tidying up the Playroom

My husband R and I believe in giving our children age appropriate chores. Tidying up and cleaning the playroom is definitely one of them. Kids should be proud of their home and respect the space they are in. Working together toward keeping a pleasant, tidy and clean playroom definitely teaches them to respect and love their space.

DO Have Realistic Expectations About a What a Playroom Can Do

A playroom does not guarantee your home will be clutter or toy free. However, it does provide for a space to put it all away when you have the energy to do it!

Speaking of realistic expectations, also consider your kids’ ages, when you daydream about what a playroom can do for you. A toddling 1-year old will probably carry her stacking cubes and sit right in the middle of the kitchen floor while you’re cooking—and that’s how it should be!

A Final Thought

I realize I might be sounding like a square footage snob and I am totally aware that not everyone can afford to dedicate an entire room to toys and what-nots.

After all, I got lucky that the girls are so close, and I know that my playroom dream will eventually end when E, my oldest, claims her space back to get her own room.

So, for all you playroomless mothers out there who are at the forefront of their battle with toys, I leave you with these genius ideas that, I think, can easily be reproduced.

Playroom Inspiration

Address the Elephant in the Room

If you are going to have a play area in your living room, you might as well address the elephant in the room.

The team at Blakes London created a stunning custom play area that transforms spare square footage into a seriously cool hidden play zone. This stylish and practical layout divides the room into adult and play areas using a thick curtain, which offers a cozy feel while easily allowing parents to close off the play space for a tidy evening.

The Classic Put the Toys Under the Stairs

playroom organization ideas

It’s not because it’s been done before that it’s a bad idea. As a matter of fact, so many people do this because it’s a great idea!

Joni from Lay Baby Lay shows us how to do this old trick right! Not only is this toy space super adorable, it is also ultra organized and blends in beautifully with any “adult” space as well.

Create a Wall Of Fame

playroom ideas on a budget

Here’s yet another fun way to embrace family life and great design!

Functionality meets great design with this budget-friendly diy wall of storage for toys.

Put Baby in the Corner… literally!

A corner or nook in your living space can easily serve as a dedicated area for toys

It can also be an opportunity to add a pop of color in an otherwise neutral space.
